The Dog Days of Winter

How many insurance agents does it take to care for a lost dog who doesn’t seem to want your help? The answer is, “More than you might think.”

On one of those single-digit mornings following the January snowstorm our team members arrived at the office to find a lost dog on our farmhouse porch. The poor thing had hunkered down at the warmest place he could find—an alcove out of the wind and against the doorway where perhaps a little heat came through the entryway cracks. He looked like a young Bernese Mountain dog mix, so with his Alpine heritage at least he had some thick fur for insulation.

He was scared and cold and, judging by his bared teeth and low growl, wasn’t interested in making friends, despite our best efforts. So, we lost the use of our main entrance into the farmhouse for a time and had to have everyone enter through the side door. We learned from our security cameras that he had arrived around midnight, so he spent a long, cold night outdoors.

We contacted the authorities, and a Manheim Borough policeman expertly maneuvered him into the back of the police car. (who knew that the local police double as dog- catchers?) One of our folks posted the dog’s picture and where it was found on a lost dog website. We later learned that the dog and his owner were reunited, so the story had a happy ending.

I know that many of our team are passionate about their pets, but this incident was a reminder of how meaningful pets are for some, me included. If you share that same passion, you may be interested to know that we can insure your pets. Pet insurance protects your loved domestic animals from catastrophic veterinary costs due to accidents or illness. Prices vary based on the type of pet, their age, and the coverage options selected, starting around $20 per month.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become a bit quicker to growl on extremely cold days, but I try to grin and bear it (rather than bare my teeth) and remind myself that Spring is just around the corner. Here’s hoping you and your pet can snuggle together someplace warm on the remaining dog days of Winter. That is, unless your pet is a tarantula. Or a fish.
